Welcome

Welcome to Dinner in the Diner! This blog/website is intended to be a one-stop shop for all those questions travelers have about what to expect while Dining on Amtrak. This will be a work in progress, as my end goal is to have a picture of every meal on every Amtrak train, so please keep checking back as things get updated. I am also hoping to make this a crowd-sourced resource, so please feel free to contact me using the information to the right to share any feedback, pictures, questions, or other options you may have.

Another great traveler resource of which I am a member is the Amtrak Unlimited discussion forum; if you can't find an answer to a question about Amtrak meals here, let the folks there know, and hopefully we can find an answer, and get it put up here for future travelers.

Happy Travels!

New Amtrak Menus and Nutrition Facts

As part of the new Amtrak menus that are being rolled out (and my apologies for any broken menu links, I'm slowly getting around to updating every page here), Amtrak has released a Nutrition Facts webpage where you can find caloric and nutritional information for all of their menu items.  That site is http://www.amtrakfoodfacts.com/, and it's still a work in progress, as when you click on your train of choice, all menu items pop up, so you'll have to refer to the actual menu to determine which food item to reference.  Still, I have to applaud Amtrak for taking a step forward and making this information available; transparency is one step to improved service, so for the customers and riders (and us railfans), this is a welcome bit of information.

New Trains

New Pictures have arrived!  Additional pictures have been added to the Crescent page from a trip this past March, and the City of New Orleans and Cardinal pages have been fleshed out as well.  Thanks to a delightful family my wife and I befriended on the Cardinal, that page is almost complete!

Additionally, on or around April of this year, Amtrak updated its' menues.  I am in the process of cross referencing entrees and adding notes where I find that entrees have been moved (or added/deleted), but if you come across any, please don't hesitate to point them out in the comments!

As always, additional contributions in terms of pictures, especially for the western long distance trains, are much appreciated.

Keep riding those trains!

Michael

Crescent Page updated

The page for the first train from our journey, the Crescent has been updated; check it out for a wealth of pictures from that train's menu.

Home Again, Home Again

Fortunately none of our trains were impacted by the weather in the Northeast, and we were able to return home without a hitch and on-time from our journey.  Pictures are uploading to Flickr now, and I'll see about grabbing some time to update the pages for the routes we traveled: the Crescent, City of New Orleans, and the Cardinal, or as I'll refer to them, the 3C's.

New Pictures Forthcoming

Quick post her from balmy New Orleans.  Came down on #19 a couple of nights ago, and once things settle down with this trip, I hope to have a plethora of pictures uploaded from several trains.  Stay tuned!

Upcoming Trip

Well, the year certainly started off busy, and with other things in life, work, volunteer service, etc., I haven't had enough time to update this site as frequently as I'd have liked.  I want to thank those folks, especially from the FlyerTalk AGR Forum who have welcomed me in and been willing to share their meal pictures and descriptions.  Several of the pages have been updated with additional meals as they are shared with me.

Starting Saturday, my fiancĂ©e and I will begin a week long mini great-circle trip, going from WAS to NOL for several days, then returning via CHI, on the Crescent, City of New Orleans, and Cardinal.  I am looking forward to this trip for lots of reasons, one of which is to be able to get some pictures myself of different meals to update here.

Thanks all, and keep on ridin the high iron!
